The Argentine surf team has reached the13th ranking position at the World junior surf championship in NewZealand. This position performs better than the one reached in 2009.The big champion was Australia, followed by Hawaii, USA and SouthAfrica.
Aeropuertos Argentina 2000, Julio Ernesto Gutierrez Conte and Surfrider Foundation were close tothe team at all times and were the main pillar for the Argentinesurfers’ participation at this international event.
The QUIKSILVER ISA WORLD JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIP ended withAustralia as the great winner of the event, adding gold medals for theteam at this championship and also in the Tag Team competition. On theindividual basis, Matt Banting and Tyler Wright crowned thechampionship within the U16 and Girls divisions obtaining a gold medaland Jordy Watson, a silver medal; this was an almost perfect closingfor the Australian team. Following this victory, the Australian teamhas gained their fifth consecutive victory.
In U18 division, the gold medal went to the Brazilian Gabriel Medinawho closed the World championship with a memorable performance causinga standing ovation from all the spectators. At the decisive heat,Medina added 19.90 points in the general score, the highest of all thechampionship, after posting 10 and 9.90 in his two best waves.
On its side, Argentina finished 13th in the ranking thus improvingand climbing up two positions from Ecuador world championship. It isworth highlighting that the Argentine team’s general cumulative scorestepped on the 11th position. However, the rule book establishes adeduction of points for the last position of every division, and thissituation benefits incomplete participating teams.
South America and Central America put just one team at the Top Tenranking. Carlos Mario Zapata and Martín Jeri’s very good performancesmade Peru team reach position 9 and became a reference team of theregion followed by Argentina (13º), Brazil (14º), Ecuador (15º) andMéxico (17º).
